chess board & pieces
I thoroughly enjoyed making this set. I made two at the time. One for me and one as a gift. It is largely based on a chessboard from Chris Salomone's youtube channel. Link included so you can check it out if you'd like.

The board is made of maple (white), walnut (dark), and cherry. The cherry is between the larger squares and adds to the board's overall aesthetic. The board is very thin and glued to a piece of MDF for stability purposes and then is trimmed in walnut. The base is made of 2" thick walnut and has a rabbet that holds the board. I routed in some finger holds as well to make it easy to lift the board.

I added some creature comforts with red felt to keep the pieces sliding on the board as well as in the storage areas to make sure everything stays nice and soft.

I feel that this piece will add a really nice talking point to our living area. Now I just need to find someone to play chess with me...
